Rug Care Tips

Quick attention and careful blotting can help reduce the impact of spills on area rugs. Keep clean white towels, club soda, and white vinegar available for common spot-cleaning situations.

BLOT – RINSE – BLOT

  1. Blot the affected area immediately using a clean white cotton towel. Avoid scrubbing the rug fibers, as aggressive rubbing may affect the rug’s texture or appearance. For thicker substances, carefully lift excess material using a spoon or similar tool before blotting.
  2. As you blot, check the towel to see whether moisture or color transfer is occurring.
  3. If color transfer appears on the towel, stop cleaning the area and allow the rug to dry. Additional moisture or agitation may affect the dyes or appearance of the rug. You may place corn starch or salt on the area to help absorb remaining moisture before vacuuming after it dries.
  4. If no color transfer appears, place a folded towel underneath the affected area if possible. Lightly dampen a sponge or towel with club soda and continue blotting the area gently. For pet-related spills, white vinegar may be used instead of club soda. Corn starch may also be used to help absorb remaining moisture as the area dries.

Avoid using household spot removers or cleaning products that are not intended for specialty rugs.

Pet urine and vomit stains

  • Pet-related spills can affect the appearance or odor of area rugs, especially if moisture reaches the rug foundation or backing materials.
  • For pet accidents, follow the same blotting process described above, substituting white vinegar for club soda when appropriate.
    • Allow the affected area to dry thoroughly. Elevating the rug or increasing airflow may help with the drying process.
    • If corn starch was used during spot treatment, allow it to dry completely before vacuuming the area.
  • Avoid using household stain removers, bleach products, or powdered deodorizers on specialty rugs unless approved for the rug material.
